Two-time Masters champion Bubba Watson believes using cannabis oil will help prolong his career.

CBD purports to have a range of health benefits ranging from relieving joint pain to stemming anxiety and trouble sleeping.

Watson becomes the second player to sign an endorsement deal with a CBD company after Champions Tour player Scott McCarron, while other stars including Phil Mickelson and Tiger Woods are also reportedly users of the substance.

Watson, told CNN: ‘I see Phil Mickelson winning at 48, so I’ve got at least eight more years of having a shot of winning some tournaments.

‘So for me it was about how I create longevity in the game of golf and spending time with my kids running around. CBD was easily a fit for me.’

The 40-year-old will wear cbdMD’s logo on his sportswear at the US PGA Championship, even though the substance remains controversial in sport.

The non-intoxicating chemical was removed from the World Anti-Doping Agency’s list of banned substances in January 2018 and is therefore legal by PGA Tour standards, but the Tour warned its use remains ‘risky’ in case it contains hidden substances.

A PGA Tour statement read: ‘As with all supplements, the PGA Tour warns players who inquire about CBD products that there is no guarantee a supplement contains what is listed on the label, therefore there is a risk that a supplement may contain a prohibited substance.’

But the 12-time PGA Tour winner insisted that doctors check every substance he takes to avoid falling foul of the rules.

He added: ‘I’ve had doctors involved to do my research and see what companies out there make a product that’s safe for me and safe for my family. It was a no brainer.

‘There’s no bad stuff in it, there are no chemicals in there that will mess you up or make you fail a drugs test. There are certain companies we trust.’

WHAT IS CBD?

Cannabinoid (CBD) is a non-intoxicating chemical found in cannabis.

Studies have shown that it has some health benefits for those suffering with severe epilepsy.

It is claimed that it also helps to relieve ailments ranging from joint pain to stemming anxiety and trouble sleeping, but there have been few clinical studies on its effectiveness.
